If I am going to be completely honest with you, my dear readers, there wasn't a lightning bolt of inspiration for The Legends of Evergreen. More so, it was a compilation of a few defining bits and pieces that morphed into something so much bigger than the individual parts:
(1) A writing contest. It's true. The prompts of a 'fairy tale' and 'a lesson learned' set the stage for this book.
(2) Our surrounding property. My family is lucky enough to call "home" smack dab in the middle of some prime Illinoisan farm land. Our house is nestled amongst the most amazing variance of trees, mature and young alike.
(3) Aesop's Fables. One of my favorite books as a child was my well-loved copy of Aesop's Fables. I loved how the creatures of the Earth took on human-like qualities to teach lessons. Some of those stories, I still hold near and dear to my heart, some 30+ years later!
What's better than a creative story written surrounded by nature, accompanied with gorgeous illustrations, and which helps to install a strong moral compass in our young readers? Nothing comes close!
